What is injection therapy?

Injection therapy is way of getting a medicine to the area of you body in which it is needed, without having to take pills or tablets which treat (and can cause side effects) the whole of body. This makes the treatment more effective, allows a lower dose to be used and reduces the unwanted side effects, which many medicines can have.

Which medicines are used in injection therapy?

The most commonly used medicines for musculoskeletal injections are steroids. These have been used for over 60 years and when used properly are very effective.

Local anesthetic can be used in addition to steroid, this will give a more immediate pain control.

Sodium hyaluronate (also known as hyaluronic acid)  is a  natural substance, present in the body when lubrication between layers of tissue is required to  eliminate friction. This can be injected into joints to give a protective effect.

When should you consider an injection?

Normally we would give nature a chance to heal problems and  try physiotherapy or other non invasive techniques before resorting to injections. When conditions are stubborn and do not clear up with rest, exercise or physiotherapy it may be time to try an injection. This should give you relief from pain and allow you to start exercising and strengthening the area, and get back to normal activities.

Is it Safe?

Nothing in life is completely safe, but when performed properly, side effects or problems after musculoskeletal injections are extremely rare. We have given may thousands of injections without any serious complications.
